Wisdom teeth are the final adult teeth to come in, generally erupting in the later teenage years. Although some patients may have adequate space for their wisdom teeth, many studies show a higher likelihood of tooth decay and gum disease, even with teeth that had enough room to come in. Many wisdom teeth do not erupt completely and can cause problems including swelling and pain. It is best to remove wisdom teeth during the teenage years before the roots are fully formed.
